Something about the way Natalie had rushed through that conversation. The way she’d casually mentioned a soft opening like it was an afterthought. The way Christopher hadn’t called me himself in two months.
A feeling crept up from somewhere deep in my chest. Not quite anger. Not quite fear. Something closer to dread.
The kind of unease you get when you realize you’ve missed something important—something obvious—and now it’s too late to go back and fix it.
I’d taught business ethics for thirty-four years. I’d warned hundreds of students about the dangers of blind trust, about the importance of documentation, about the difference between love and liability.
And here I was, sitting in an empty kitchen, holding a cold cup of coffee, wondering why my own son had let his wife make a phone call that should have come from him.
Why hadn’t Christopher called me himself?
Why hadn’t he invited me to the opening?
And what else hadn’t he told me?
I sat there in that quiet kitchen for a long time after Natalie hung up, turning her words over in my mind like stones I couldn’t quite fit together.
Ten weeks.
The hotel had been open for ten weeks and no one had thought to call.
But it hadn’t always been like this.
I leaned back in my chair and let my mind drift to the beginning—the months right after I’d said yes to Christopher’s dream.
Back then, everything had felt right.
Back then, I’d believed I was doing what a father should do.
The first transfer went through in May of 2018: $200,000.
I remember sitting at the same table with my laptop open, fingers hovering over the keyboard before I clicked confirm. Catherine had been gone for three years by then, and the house still felt too big, too empty.
Funding Christopher’s hotel gave me something to look forward to, something to believe in.
When the transaction cleared, I called my son to let him know.
“Dad, I can’t believe you’re doing this,” he’d said, and I could hear the catch in his voice. “I’m going to make you proud. I promise.”
The second transfer came in August. Another $200,000.
By then, Christopher was sending me photos every few days: scaffolding going up, old wallpaper being stripped away, the courtyard being cleared of decades of overgrowth.
He’d video-call me on Sunday evenings, walking me through the property room by room, talking about crown molding and original hardwood floors like they were treasures he’d discovered himself.
“We found the original fireplace mantels in the basement, Dad,” he’d said one night, holding his phone up to show me the carved wood. “Can you believe someone covered these up? We’re going to restore every single one.”
I loved those calls.
